General Information about BENZOİK ACID
The chemical formula is C6H5COOH. It is a colorless and crystalline or powder solid. Benzoic acid is found in nature in blueberries, cranberries, mushrooms, cinnamon and cloves. It is also found naturally in some dairy products as a result of bacterial fermentation. The aqueous solution is acidic and is a slightly stronger acid than acetic acid. Oxidation of benzene with concentrated sulfuric acid is also used in the preparation of benzoic acid. Benzoic acid is an antimicrobial which is mostly used as sodium salt. The reason for the widespread use of sodium benzoate is that the water-soluble nature of the benzoic acid is low.
Production and Reactions
Commercially, benzoic acid is usually obtained by reaction of toluene with oxygen. Bromobenzene intermediate phenol may be converted to benzoic acid by the & quot; carburizing & quot; method of magnesium bromide:
C6H5MgBr CO2? c6h5co2mgb is
C6H5CO2MgBr HCl? C6H5CO2H MgBrCl
The benzoic acid may be prepared by oxidizing the chlorine chloride and water in a manner to give water with alkali KMnO4 catalyzed:
C6H5CH2Cl 2 KOH 2 [O]? C6H5COOK KCI H2O
Benzo trichloride (C6H5-CC15) can be obtained by hydrolysis of the alkaline medium with a suitable catalyst.
They can be obtained by hydrolysis of benzonitrile (C6H5 CN) under appropriate ambient conditions. Also, Hunsdiecker decarboxylation can be achieved by forming silver salt and heating. Oxidation of toluene with air oxygen in the presence of a suitable catalyst such as (C6H5-CH3) potassium permanganate, chromium trioxide or cobalt naphthenate
Usage areas
Medicine
Benzoic acid was used as an expectorant, analgesic and antiseptic in the early 20th century.
food
Benzoic acid salts are added to foods in order to eliminate all kinds of microorganisms such as unwanted bacteria, molds and yeasts in the presence of sorbic acid and to prevent their growth and activities. In order for these substances to be effective, the pH of the medium, composition, water activity and the amount of use are important. Benzoic acid is added to the food by reacting directly with or with some metal salts.
Chemistry
In inorganic and analytical laboratories it is used as a reference substance and to prevent corrosion and is also found in chemicals prepared to kill insect pests.
Cosmetic
It is used as an additive in the content of cosmetic products (shampoo, shaving foam etc.) used in daily life.
Other
It is used as an auxiliary agent in antifreeze used in vehicles. It is used in dyeing cotton fibers in textile sector.
