SODIUM SULFITE BASF

General Information

Chemical formula of Na2SO3, white, unstable, protective chemical structure is a reducing agent. In acidic conditions sulfuric acid forms. It is used as a good preservative as well as oxidizing and bleaching agents to prevent decolorization.

Production and Reactions

Sodium sulfite solution can be prepared in laboratory environment as a result of sulfur dioxide gas and sodium hydroxide reaction.

When reacted with concentrated hydrochloric acid, the aqueous sodium sulfite return can take place.

Sodium sulfite can form bisulfite addition with aldehydes. Sodium sulphate can be obtained by interaction with oxygen.

Usage areas

Photo
It is used in the industry as an oxygen scavenging agent and in photographic paper emulsions.

Water
It is used in the form of a hypo-clear solution in the water treatment industry.

Explosive
It is used in TNT purification especially in military sector.

Chemistry
It is used in many reactions and in production of sodium thiosulphate by making use of bi-directional reaction in laboratory environment.

food
In the food sector, E 221 is used in many parts. It is used as a part function enhancer in improving the kneading capacity of bread.

Rubber
It is used in stabilization of latex in this sector.

Paper
It is used for the production of paper pulp, rags (ordinary newspaper) and for the disintegration of the straw.
