General Information
Its molecular weight is H (OCH 2 CH 2) nOH and its molecular weight range is between 200 and 6000. Properties and uses vary according to molecular weight (PEG300, PEG400 etc.) Water can be mixed and dissolved in certain proportions with many alcohols and organic solvents. Does not hydrolyze and decompose at low vapor pressures. Depending on the catalyst type, the polymerization mechanism may be cationic or anionic
Production and Reactions
Polyethylene glycol is obtained by interaction of ethylene oxide with ethylene glycol or ethylene glycol oligomers. Alkali catalysts such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH), potassium hydroxide (KOH), or sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) are used to prepare a low molecular weight polyethylene glycol.
